Ten Years of Wuxi Internet of Things: From "No Man’s Land" to "New Highland"
China’s first prefecture-level city with narrow-band Internet of Things coverage, China’s first prefecture-level city with Internet of Things connection scale exceeding 10 million, China’s first high-standard all-optical network city, China’s first commercial network with IPv6 scale, and the world’s largest city-level car networking application demonstration city, people have the impression that Wuxi, which has been a land of plenty since ancient times, is promoting a brand-new transformation with Internet of Things and high technology.
The 2019 World Internet of Things Expo was held in Wuxi recently, and this is the fourth consecutive time that Wuxi has hosted this world-class Internet of Things conference. "World Internet of Things sees China, and China Internet of Things sees Wuxi". Ten years ago, the National Sensor Network Innovation Demonstration Zone settled in Wuxi, which opened the prelude to the development of the Internet of Things in China, made Wuxi develop from the "no man’s land" of the Internet of Things into a new highland of Internet of Things technology in China, and also branded a distinctive "Taihu Lake mark" on the world Internet of Things map.

"Strong man’s broken wrist" stepped into "no man’s land"
The development of the Internet of Things industry in Wuxi originated from a "crisis". In 2007, cyanobacteria broke out in Taihu Lake, which triggered a drinking water crisis in Wuxi. After that, Wuxi took the adjustment of industrial structure along Taihu Lake as the most important work and put it on the historical agenda.
"At that time, it can be said that it was the determination of a strong man to control pollution and promote industrial transformation and upgrading." Gao Yaguang, deputy mayor of Wuxi, witnessed and participated in the whole process of the development of the Internet of Things industry in Wuxi in the past ten years.
According to reports, at that time, Wuxi made great efforts to reduce low-end production capacity and eliminate pollution sources, reducing more than 3,000 enterprises along the coast in a short time. This had a great impact on the economic development of Wuxi at that time, and the financial pressure was enormous. There are many enterprises that have been reduced, but there is no new increment. The difficulty of transforming old and new kinetic energy has caused negative growth in Wuxi’s economy and population for some time.
In this transition period, the Internet of Things began to enter the vision of Wuxi. "Ten years ago, the Internet of Things was still a strange word. I was the deputy director of the Science and Technology Bureau at that time, and I had never heard of this word from a technical background. "Gao Yaguang said that the development of the Internet of Things entered a" no man’s land "for Wuxi at that time.
Gao Yaguang said that at that time, with the help of Wuxi’s accumulated technology in manufacturing and high technology for many years and the platform of China Perception Center, a demonstration exploration in the field of Internet of Things was started.
Facing the present situation of "no man’s land", the country, Jiangsu Province and Wuxi City have all set the overall goal of aiming at industrial application, building industrial clusters and demonstration application pilot areas. At the same time, drawing lessons from the development experience of the Internet, there was no quantitative scale index for the development of Wuxi Internet of Things at that time. Before 2010, no one expected that the development of the Internet would be so rapid. One of the important reasons was that the Internet was not defined, and it grew by itself. The development of Internet of Things also continues the experience of Internet development.
"This is an important reason why the development of the Internet of Things in Wuxi has achieved results," Gao Yaguang said.
At the Internet of Things Expo, Lou Qinqin, secretary of jiangsu provincial party committee, said that the Internet of Things should be made into the most distinctive and competitive industry, so that it can better promote production, enter life and benefit the people.
The Internet of Things has stepped into the spotlight of China’s scientific and technological innovation and shouldered the heavy responsibility of building a powerful country. It can be said that the Internet of Things has been developing in Wuxi for ten years, which is a decade in which the Internet of Things was first tried in China and the Internet of Things industry in China has developed by leaps and bounds.
Benchmark the world and create a "new highland"
After ten years of development, Wuxi’s Internet of Things industry has become a new highland of Internet of Things in China and even in the world.
In recent years, Wuxi has vigorously implemented the core strategy driven by innovation and the leading strategy of strengthening the city by industry, and has made unremitting efforts to promote the transformation, upgrading and development of economic industries. In 2017, Wuxi officially entered the "trillion GDP club". In 2018, the city’s GDP exceeded 1.1 trillion yuan, and the per capita GDP was second only to Shenzhen in cities with GDP exceeding one trillion, ranking second in the country. Wuxi’s economic development has achieved a historic leap, and the city’s energy level and comprehensive strength have been significantly enhanced.
In 2018, the operating income of Wuxi Internet of Things industry exceeded 260 billion yuan, accounting for 1/4 of the country and half of Jiangsu. From only a few dozen Internet of Things enterprises in 2009, it has now gathered 180,000 industrial personnel and more than 2,000 Internet of Things-related enterprises. The industrial scale of integrated circuit industry and software industry both exceeded 100 billion yuan, making it the second city in China with an integrated circuit scale exceeding 100 billion yuan after Shanghai. At the same time, Wuxi’s traditional manufacturing industry performed well. Last year, the city’s industrial added value increased by 9%, ranking first in the province.
In Wuxi Zhongke Weizhi Company, the reporter saw that on the automatic parcel sorting lines, parcels were accurately sorted to their respective areas by taking photos and scanning codes. Except for the links of the parcels on the line, the whole process was completely unmanned, which greatly saved costs and improved efficiency.
The staff of Zhongke Weizhi introduced that through the use of automation equipment, the manpower was saved by 2/3, and the speed of parcel sorting was increased by more than 10 times. At the same time, this set of technology is completely independent research and development, and has been widely used in the field of express delivery, such as "four links and one access", rookie network, Suning cloud business and so on.
"At present, in terms of logistics automation, there are basically no foreign competitors in China, and even foreign competitors are basically established by domestic enterprises." The person in charge said that technology research and development are being vigorously promoted to further improve the technical level. For example, the current five-sided scanning upgrade of parcels is broken through to six-sided scanning, and the full automation of logistics sorting is truly realized.
When I came to Wuxi Hailan House, the reporter realized for the first time that there are so many high-tech elements hidden in this "man’s wardrobe". In the automated warehousing and logistics center of Hailan House in Wuxi, the reporter saw that a piece of clothes was accurately sorted into more than 5,000 different boxes by the assembly line and sent to more than 5,000 stores of Hailan House in China.
"Technology, algorithms and data have become the core competitiveness of Hailan," said Jiangnan, vice president of Hailan Group. Without the support of technology, it is unimaginable to manage such a huge network. Through the data feedback of each network terminal, Hailan can adjust the quantity, style and type of each store in time to better meet the market demand. "The main business of Haishu House has turned to both ends of the industrial chain such as design, brand and technology."
Wuxi has the world’s largest open smart car testing area-220 square kilometers of urban open road environment. The traffic lights here will "think" It can communicate with the passing vehicles, and tell them how fast they can pass the green light and red light, so that they can get ready in the distance.
Ma Zikang, a senior engineer of Audi’s automatic driving, said that Audi’s intelligent cars are being tested in Wuxi, where the test environment and hardware configuration can’t be realized elsewhere.
"Now, half of the international Internet of Things standards are formulated by Wuxi," Gao Yaguang said. The expansion of Wuxi’s Internet of Things industry in the fields of patents and application demonstration projects shows Wuxi’s leading position in Internet of Things technology. There are Wuxi Internet of Things enterprises in more than 60 countries and more than 700 cities around the world. "Wuxi’s pioneering in the Internet of Things has brought great impetus to the development of the Internet of Things in China, big data and cloud computing."
From "Wuxi practice" to "Wuxi experience" and then to "Wuxi wisdom", Wuxi has always stood at the forefront of leading the development of the Internet of Things with its tolerant and open policy environment and consistent craftsman spirit.
Policy environment becomes the key to development.
The development of the Internet of Things industry in Wuxi is inseparable from the policy of tolerance and openness, and the consistent and persistent spirit at the national, provincial and municipal levels to create a good ecosystem for the development of the Internet of Things industry.
"In the ten years of the development of the Internet of Things in Wuxi, no matter how the personnel change and how the planning is adjusted, Wuxi has always adhered to the development direction of the Internet of Things, from quantitative change to qualitative change, and it has been adhered to for ten years, reflecting the craftsman spirit," Gao Yaguang said.
In the process of demonstration, Wuxi promotes application by demonstration and market by application. Taking meeting market demand as the focus and direction of R&D, and gathering industries through R&D breakthroughs, and then leading by industry and technology to form a complete chain.
"If you want to lose face, you will leave it in Wuxi, and when your wings grow hard, you will fly out and blossom elsewhere." Gao Yaguang said that it is such a policy environment that encourages innovation and tolerates failure that attracts groups of innovative enterprises and attracts groups of successful enterprises to set their headquarters in Wuxi.
In terms of policy orientation, Wuxi focuses on key points, listens to the voices of enterprises, understands the common needs of enterprises, and does everything possible to help enterprises achieve scientific and technological achievements, so as to help enterprises get on the horse and send them another journey.
In this regard, Gao Yaguang, a former science student and technician, has a personal experience. Twenty years ago, she graduated from materials major and developed a high-temperature flame retardant material. At the same time, her university teacher developed the same technology in DuPont. The difference is that the state where DuPont is located in the United States subsequently issued a policy requiring all decorative materials in hospitals, stations and other places to use flame retardant materials. This technology will soon open the market, and it will continue to improve after it is guaranteed by funds, and the technology is getting better and better.
At that time, there was no domestic market for the application of this technology. It was not until seven or eight years later that a mine accident focused people’s attention on flame retardant materials. At this time, Gao Yaguang’s invention was favored by the market and won the scientific and technological progress award.
This personal experience also made Gao Yaguang pay more attention to the landing of technological achievements and market-oriented promotion in the subsequent scientific and technological work and management of scientific and technological work. "It is easier to get things done in Wuxi" has become the simplest evaluation of Wuxi by enterprises and the highest praise for Wuxi.
A new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation are vigorously promoted, and the intelligent industry is developing rapidly. It is imperative to develop the Internet of Things. Wuxi has formed an industrial pattern of Internet of Things that leads the development and radiates across the country, and will build China highland in the field of Internet of Things in the world.
